Except the LORD build the house,
they labour in vain that build it:
except the LORD keep the city,
the watchman waketh but in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late,
to eat the bread of sorrows: f
or so he giveth his beloved sleep.
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD:
and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man;
so are children of the youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed,
but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
(Psalm 127)
What peace we find here. The Lord builds the house and keeps the city and keeps us safe within his walls. He governs through the rulers of this world. They are all his servants, working his will. In vain do we worry about the next day, and in sorrow do we eat our fill. Yet he gives sleep to rest and food to strengthen the body.The Lord delights in children, and blessed is the house which keeps them. God keeps his church in the way of peace leting no harm come nigh thee. But blessed is Mary among women, and blessed is the fruit of the womb. For when the sound of her greeting comes to the ears of the Church the womb does leap for joy.
